Like many people out there, I had been prospected by insurance advisers at least once when I am walking out from the MRT station, bus interchange or in shopping malls, and get frustrated by their
persistent efforts despite my rejections. Hence, joining the insurance industry was never one of the career choice when I was studying in the university.
However, in the midst of my university days, my dad who is a sole breadwinner decided to leave
his job due to work dissatisfaction and pursue his passion as a full time photographer which meant that his income would be irregular. Thus, I felt the need to contribute to the household allowance as I was the elderst child in the family. At the point, my husband, Mervyn, and I was introduced to the insurance industry by a friend and we decided to give a try as we did not like the idea of a 9 to 5 office job as we felt it would be mundane. However, after being contracted with the insurance company, we were told to prospect our friends and relative which we felt uncomfortable and this led to our search for a company with a different business model.
I called up my cousin Joanna, who is a successful financial consultant with Peter Tan Organisation (PTO®) and she invited us to visit the company. When we stepped in, we saw a team of enthusiatic
and hardworking people at work, immediately we knew that this is the place we wanted to work in. We also learnt that Peter Tan Organisation (PTO®) has created a milestones that have not been achieved by any other organisation in Singapore.
Looking back, my first 2 years in Peter Tan Organization (PTO®) has indeed been a great learning experience. I started the career with street prospecting and roadshows and through the happy times and hardships I forge many good friendships with my colleagues and clients. Peter Tan Organization (PTO®) has provided me with constant trainings so as to equipped us with sufficient knowledge to inculcate the public about the importance of financial planning. Through these trainings, my business has progressed to appoinment model which is more professional and less tiring. My manger, Lifen, had provided a listening ear when I needed as the intital days in the career was definately not easy as it was filled challenges such as rejections and prospects not turning up for appointments. Looking back, this career has indeed mould me into a stronger person with a “never say die” spirit. Most importantly, I feel grateful for the environment that Peter Tan has created for the organisation. For example, advisers tend to be less hardworking after two years in the career, thus Peter Tan would also think of new ideas to motivate us to work harder. Peter Tan has also created a organisation that emphasizes the importance of putting family first and being filial to our parents. He has invited the top 20 advisers and our parents in the year 2007 to his house so as to know them better. This move has indeed led my mum to understand my career better and thus she was able to give me more support in my career. Throughout the 2 years plus in Peter Tan Organisation (PTO®), I have grew from a single girl to a happily married lady who is currently expecting a boy this coming August. As our organisation grows, there are more married couples and pregnant mothers like me, and Peter Tan has also set up a support group to help us to be able to cope with the changes in our lives. The support from him is really something which I was not able to receive from other companies I worked with earlier.
I am very grateful to Peter Tan Organisation (PTO®) for all that it has provided for me in my career, and the growth in my life both emotionally and financially and I look forward to the greater heights that I am able to achieve in my carrer. Visit me @ petertan.com.sg
